Bio-energy harvesting generators are attractive as supplemental energy sources to power electronic devices. This project addresses the development of a knee energy harvester that generates electricity by harnessing the bimodal motion produced at the knee-joint section. A generic knee brace was implemented to act as the mechanical connection to the host; the bi-directional knee input is then converted into an unidirectional rotation for an electromagnetic generator using a transmission system allowing harvesting of biomechanical energy from both the knee flexion and extension. The goal of this project is to design a knee brace capable to producing enough power to charge a cellphone.
